Schattorie: Bengaluru have the best chance to win the I-League

Eelco Schattorie hasn’t been a fan of Mumbai FC’s style of play. During his stint with United Sports Club, he was vocal about his aversion for the tactics employed by Khalid Jamil. However he is quick to praise the Mumbai FC gaffer after he saw a change in their brand of football lately.

“Last year I criticized Mumbai FC a few times. I saw at the Federation Cup and in the I-League, Khalid (Jamil) playing much more positive football and that’s worth a compliment,” he opined.

“The level of I-League is higher than last year. There are better foreigners, the tempo of playing is higher and less long ball play, more foreign coaches and I see more young talents getting a chance,” he added.

Schattorie picked Bengaluru FC, East Bengal and Sporting Clube de Goa when asked as to who would win the I-League this season. He added that the southern side’s reign at the top could come to an abrupt end.

“Bengaluru has the best chances I think because no pressure and their only focus was the I-League and Federation Cup. On the other hand, it's unthinkable a team stays on top all season. Every team will get a setback.

“I do hope that East Bengal wins its matches as they have less to catch up. They have the best team and hope all players get fit. Sporting Clube de Goa is interesting and we have to see how they get out of the deception after losing the Federation Cup final. All other teams I don't see any chance.”

Schattorie hasn’t yet been approached by any club but he hasn’t ruled out coming back to India again.

“No club has approached me and I spoken to no one. First I go on a holiday and see what my future will be. Coming back to India is certainly an option and I keep the door wide open.”

Goa-India-Mozambique Preview: Hosts aim for Gold

1-28-2014

As the Goa-India versus Mozambique final looms, there is a lot of hope and expectation in Goa of the hosts being able to win gold.

Mozambique defeated Sri Lanka in the semi-finals 1-0 enroute to their finals of the Lusofonia Games. They played a rather dull encounter with the Lankans after coming from a morale boosting win over India in the preliminary round.

Plenty of chances were created but they hardly capitalized on any of them with their back four being the main cause of their success so far at the Games.  They have kept two clean sheets in their last two games and it has been extremely difficult for the opponent strikers to get past them. Their pace and physical presence will also come into picture to combat a much more less physical Indian team.

Their weakness is probably the lack of creativity in midfield. They have strong and fast players in but they have lack the cutting edge in creating major chances in the final third of the pitch.

Luis Miquissone has been the stand out performer for the men in red this tournament. His pace and hunger for goals are going to be big problem for the Indian defense to deal with. He scored a cracking goal in the semi-final.

Indians had a rather comfortable victory against a Macau side who were defensive from the very first minute.  India’s strength lies in the midfield with Brandon Fernandes, Richard Costa and Sahil Tavora keeping the possession going and Mandar Desai together with either Myron Fernandes or Nickson Castanha on the flanks.

Their weakness comes in the form of a fragile keeper in Albino Gomes. He almost gave the match away in the Macau game when there was a mix-up with the defenders on a couple of occasions.

A star has been born in Brandon Fernandes at the Lusofonia Games, and his name is on every Goan’s mouth at the moment. The short but attacking number 10 has proved why he is India’s best future prospect. He shone in every match he has played and created a variety of chances for his side. His vision and skill can be a problem for the Mozambique team.

He is also a player not shy to shoot from a long distance with the highest number of shots in the tournament so far.

The match looks like a mouth watering clash between strength and skill as India will play Mozambique at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru stadium in Fatorda.
